Abstract

“Mantiq-ut-Tair Jadeed” is a novel by Mustansar Hussain Tarar, which takes the reader on a unique intellectual and spiritual journey. This novel presents the history of human consciousness and evolution through symbolic characters, where birds serve as symbols of divine dialogue. The novel draws from the traditions of Attar’s “Mantiq-ut-Tair”, presenting these birds in a new light, where each bird holds its own distinct symbolic significance. In Tarar’s portrayal, the birds are not only symbols but also represent the seven stages of the inner journey, which include inquiry, love, knowledge, detachment, unity, wonder, and union. The novel intricately weaves historical, religious, and philosophical references with themes of love and inner experiences, guiding the reader through a profound intellectual and spiritual exploration. Tarar’s use of symbolism and narrative mastery make this novel a significant contribution to Urdu literature.
